Just by the north Ōtaki roundabout, an interesting and historic building houses an eclectic collection of unique artworks and handcrafts. As the name indicates, the Old Courthouse Gallery was Ōtaki’s courthouse and you can still see where the judge - and the accused - used to sit. Instead of legal personages and miscreants, you now see beautiful and intriguing art and fine craft.
The Old Courthouse Gallery (originally known as Artscape) was set up nine years ago as an art and craft collective to foster local talent in Ōtaki and its surrounds. Everything on display is made with care and individuality by local artists and craftspeople, ranging from experienced and established artists to those developing their skills.
