Rod is one of Kāpiti’s outstanding potters. During his 54-year career, he has not only created astounding garden art and domestic ware but is a key figure in the district and neighbouring regions for the ceramic artist community.
Working in a variety of clays and techniques including hand-built, wheel-thrown, and raku, Rod takes his inspiration from the environment around him, from water collecting in rockpools to volcanic plateaux. In his outdoor clay workshop located in the garden of two other Arts Trail artists in Ōtaki Beach, you can see Rod working at his wheel to form the amazing bright-coloured and decorated pots on display elsewhere in the garden.
A foundation member and President for 22 years inspired by the form and colours of nature, of the Ōtaki Potters’ Club (also in the Arts Trail) Rod has supported many other potters with his work for the club, including setting up the new premises and organising and delivering workshops and classes for all ages.
