Look for the wonderful mural brightening up the corner of Main St, Ōtaki, and hear the lovely sounds of Māori music as you step into this welcoming art space, where many local artists create and show their work.
Initiated in November 2020, Toi Tangata officially opened its doors in March 2021, to house a working artists' studio and collective gallery. The gallery was inspired by Maori culture, as a collaborative artist-run collective art space for practitioners and public to interact, and to provide easy access to high quality indigenous art and artists (from Aotearoa and elsewhere) in the Otaki community.
At Toi Tangata you will see a very diverse range of artistic creation, including Tā moko, alongside stunning paintings, prints, jewellery, and fashion inspired by indigenous art forms. Many who visit, to look or to work, comment on the uplifting, healing space they experience. Toi Tangata also runs creative workshops and community art events for the local community.
