Waikanae Community Board by-election 2022
The Kāpiti Coast District Council called for a by-election following a resignation from the Waikanae Community Board.
Community Boards are an important part of local democracy and we encourage anyone who has an interest in representing the interests of, and advocating on behalf of, the Waikanae community to get in touch with the Council.
Nominations for the vacancy opened on 24 November 2021, and completed nominations were required to be with the electoral officer no later than noon Wednesday 22 December 2021.

Final results
As there was only one candidate for one vacancy, Michelle Lewis was declared duly elected [PDF 38 KB] to the Waikanae Community Board on Wednesday 22 December 2021.

The by-election to fill the vacancy on the Waikanae Community Board will be held by postal vote under the Single Transferable Voting (STV) electoral system. Voting documents will be delivered between 26–28 January and must be returned by noon Wednesday 17 February. If you do not receive your papers during this time you can make a special vote by calling the electoral officer.

Our electoral officer will be available to answer your questions at the following information sessions regarding standing for the Waikanae Community Board:
- Thursday 16 December, 7–8pm at the Waikanae Community Centre, 28–32 Utauta Street, Waikanae
- Saturday 18 December, 8am–12pm at the Waikanae Community Market, Park Avenue, Waikanae
Voter information
To check your enrolment, a copy of the Preliminary Residential and Ratepayer Electoral Roll to be used for the by-election is available for inspection at the following locations, during normal office hours:
- Paraparaumu Customer Service Centre, 175 Rimu Road, Paraparaumu
- Paraparaumu Library, 9 Iver Trask Place, Paraparaumu
- Waikanae Library and Service Centre, Mahara Place, Waikanae
The preliminary roll closes on Wednesday 22 December 2021. If you are on the roll by this closing date, your voting paper will be sent to you by post. You can still enrol after this date, but you will need to complete a special vote.

- complete the Electoral Commission enrolment form, available at any of the above locations or at any NZ Post Shop, and return it to the Electoral Commission before the roll closes

Non-resident ratepayer electors
If you pay rates on a property in the Waikanae Community Board area, but live outside the area (non-resident ratepayer electors):

COVID-19 impact
COVID-19 impacts on the by-election:
- The by-election should be able to run normally in accordance with the COVID-19 traffic light system.
- The Electoral Officer has the ability to extend the voting period, after voting has started, if necessary to ensure that everyone has a reasonable opportunity to vote safely.
- “Meet the candidates” events
Candidates and other organisations planning to host events should check with Government guidance on gathering and event limits for the different traffic light levels, noting that there are different limits depending on whether attendees need to have a vaccine pass or not. Check Traffic lights.
