Profile - Waimeha Lagoon, Waikanae
Waimeha Lagoon predominantly consists of residents from Queens Road, Eruini and Tutere Streets, creating a Neighbourhood with the lagoon at its heart. However, the larger Waikanae Beach community is invited to participate and interest has come from as far away as Goldie Place.
In the process of entering the competition, the community has discovered a wealth of knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm among its members, including expert gardeners, preservers, knitters and spinners, a community mulcher, creative young people and an amateur radio operator – all within walking distance.
The team's goals for the competition are:
- To build a stronger network of neighbours to be better equipped to face civil emergencies and respond to environmental challenges.
- To explore the possibility of establishing a community garden.
- To investigate opportunities for a more localised food production system by linking up local businesses and a large number of people who enjoy growing food.
- To discover ways of living more sustainably.
