In their own words:
“Avion Terrace is a quiet cul-de-sac redeveloped in 2000 and now consisting of 23 homes that are adjacent to fields that are part of Paraparaumu Airport. There are a variety of households including 10 retired couples, five families with young children; plus a mixture of professional and business people.
“There is a wide range of interests among the householders, e.g. gardeners, historians, musicians, Air Commodore of Kāpiti Aero Club, and members of the Herb Society, orchestras, choirs, sports clubs and Rotary. Several are involved including hospice, library, Paekākāriki Railway Museum and Civil Defence. All householders are proud to be part of Avion Terrace and enjoy the friendship and supportive environment shown by residents.
“We are delighted that our street has recently been planted with olive trees in response to an approach to Kāpiti District Council. Similarly, we acknowlegde removal of gorse in the field adjacent to our street.
“We have held street parties in the last 3 years and these have been well attended and enjoyed by all. It is indeed a ‘community’.”
Their ideas and aspirations for the competition:
“The competition provides an opportunity for us to work together as a community on a project which will enhance Avion Terrace. It will assist the residents to raise our awareness of environment issues and reduce the environmental footprints of individual households.
“By working together on this project we anticipate that everyone will get to know householders better and this could provide an opportunity to develop a skills list with a with a view to sharing expertise and physical resources.
“Further greening of the street as a whole is also a goal, particularly on the side of the road by the field. This could be done by the establishment of drought tolerant plantings.
“We also look forward to the assistance from Council experts and other professionals on how we can further reduce our individual and collective environmental footprint.
“It is a project all residents of Avion terrace are excited about.”
