Profile - Wellington Rd, Paekakariki
The Northern end of Wellington Road in Paekākāriki has entered the Greenest Street competition to reduce its ecological footprint and foster community.
The diverse group of households between Tangahoe Street and Queen Elizabeth Park includes all ages and stages, including the Holiday Park.
With the support of last year's Greenest Street entry Kakariki Street, they will increase the network of people in Paekākāriki aiming to live sustainably.
A range of experts will be enlisted to help the street learn new skills such as gardening, beekeeping, planting for birds, to fish sustainable and to make and use cleaners and other products that don't harm the environment.
The enthusiastic group encourages others to join them in sharing skills and resources to reduce consumerism and waste.
Footprinting is a way of measuring our individual environmental impact and expresses it as 'Earths' - the number of planet Earths needed if all the world's population used the same resources.
The average individual environmental footprint for the Wellington Rd team is displayed below. They have nine months to work with their neighbours to reduce it.
= 3.3 Earths (as at January 2012)
