Support for Whangārei

Kāpiti Coast District Council has ‘adopted’ Whangārei District Council, to provide solidarity and support to the Northland community recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle’s aftermath.

We’ve all been seeing the devastating scenes and wanting to help in a meaningful way.

Adopt a community programme | Relief fund account | What donations will go towards

Adopt a community programme

Local Government NZ's "adopt a community" programme has matched our council with the Whangārei District Council and community, who've been badly hit by the cyclone. "Adopt a community' is a nationwide initiative connecting councils with some of the most devastated regions – community to community.

It’s a way for mayors and councils to reach out and support the mayors and councils that have been hit hard, by raising money for their communities. It gives us a direct connection with a badly affected community.

We know from experience that getting communities back on their feet is a marathon, not a sprint. That’s especially true with a disaster of this size.

This is just one way our wonderful Kāpiti community can express support and find a connection with another community. There are lots of other opportunities to donate that communities can also support.

Relief fund account

Donations straight to the Whangārei Mayoral Relief Fund gives the Whangārei District Council the ability to direct funds to where they’re needed most.

Whangārei Mayoral Relief Fund:
Account: 02-0492-0358315-00
Please include name of donor with reference: Mayoral Relief Fund

You can find out more about the relief fund at Mayoral Relief Fund on Whangārei District Council's website.

What donations will go towards

Your donation will help the right items get to the right people. Donated relief funds will help with things like:

  • septic tank overflows
  • filling water tanks
  • clearing debris from properties
  • supporting impacted businesse
  • repairs to assets like fences and footpaths
  • helping people facing financial hardship.

If the relief fund reaches a point where the needs of the Whangārei community are met in response to this event, Whangārei District Council will reallocate surplus donations to other Cyclone Gabrielle-affected districts.
