Kāpiti Coast District Council is looking for a Human Resources Advisor to join our established and supportive People and Capability team. This is a great opportunity to work in a values-driven organisation that’s committed to positive employee experiences and strong community outcomes.

About the role

Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources Service Delivery, you’ll be a trusted advisor to people leaders across the Council. Working within a portfolio model, you’ll provide practical, people-centred HR advice and support across the full employee lifecycle.

You’ll work both independently and collaboratively with HR Business Partners and the wider People & Capability team to deliver consistent, high-quality HR services that support business goals and organisational culture.

On any one day, you could be advising on a wide variety of people matters, including employment relations, change processes, performance management and development, remuneration and supporting initiatives. No two days are ever the same!   

Key responsibilities

  • Build strong, trusted relationships with people and people leaders across council 
  • Assist in building capabilities of people leaders in HR practice through providing effective guidance and support across all people activities including discipline, grievances, performance management, change management, induction, remuneration, recognition and reward 
  • Work with the payroll team to ensure variations to employment agreements are completed in a timely manner
  • Contribute to the review, development and implementation of optimised HR systems, policies, processes and practices to ensure they are effective, fit for purpose.
  • Assist and lead people leaders in the end-to-end recruitment process to build capability and demonstrate council’s employee value proposition.
  • Work with HR Business Partners to support HR initiatives and projects
  • You will have the opportunity to lead projects, aligned to your strengths and skillset
  • Support the Organisational Development team and HR Business Partners in rolling out OD initiatives including the annual engagement survey, performance cycle, including the rollout of a new performance tool.

About you

You’ll be a resilient confident HR generalist who enjoys variety, collaboration, and working closely with leaders.

You will likely bring:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Human Resources, or equivalent practical experience
  • Proven experience in a fast-paced HR advisory or generalist role
  • Strong knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation and Employment Relations processes
  • The ability to provide pragmatic, solution-focused HR advice 
  • Strong relationship-building and stakeholder management skills
  • Confidence having courageous conversations and managing expectations
  • A commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Competency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

We understand transferable skills can come from experience gained from outside of work.

You don’t need to be knowledgeable in all these areas already, but you do need to be on board with learning and have a genuine interest and willingness to grow.
