Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors.

If bad weather strikes, work will be postponed to the next suitable day or night

Road closures

Contractors will be completing night-time road maintenance, including milling and asphalt resurfacing on Ngaio Road.

The work is part of Council’s ongoing road renewal programme to ensure local roads remain safe, resilient, and fit for a growing community.

When: Sunday to Wednesday, 1 to 4 November

Duration: 4 nights, between 7pm and 7am

Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather strikes, work will be postponed to the next suitable night.

Traffic management and access:

Asphalt resurfacing requires large machinery which influences how traffic is managed and how the public and our workers are kept safe.

Ngaio Road will be closed between Main Road (Old SH1) and Omahi Street.

Please follow the signposted detours via Martin Street and Te Moana Road.

Driveway access may be temporarily restricted, but crews on site will be available to assist.

Notifying residents:

Residents and businesses near the work will receive a letter from the contractors before work starts.

Minimising disruption:

This work is done at night when there are fewer vehicles so they can complete the job safely, quickly and efficiently without causing major disruption to traffic and people’s daytime schedules on this busy route.

While crews aim to keep disruptions to a minimum, machinery is unavoidably noisy at times and there might be potential vibrations.

Thanks to our community for your patience and support while we carry out this important work to keep our roads safe and reliable.

Work area:

Contractors will be completing road maintenance, including milling and asphalt resurfacing on Kāpiti Road, beach side. The work is part of Council’s ongoing road renewal programme to ensure local roads remain safe, resilient, and fit for a growing community.

When: Tuesday–Friday, 27–30 October

Duration: 4 days, between 9am and 7pm

Roadworks are dependent on weather and other factors. If bad weather strikes, work will be postponed to the next suitable day.

Traffic management and access:

Kāpiti Road will be closed in two stages between Ocean Road and Golf Road.

  • Closure 1 – Tuesday and Wednesday – between MacLean Street and Golf Road.

  • Closure 2 – Thursday and Friday – between Ocean Road and Howell Road.

Please follow the signposted detours via Marine Parade, Ocean Road and Seaview Road.

Business and driveway access may be temporarily restricted, but crews onsite will assist as required.

The Metlink bus stops on Kāpiti Road near Golf Road will be temporary relocated to 8 Manly Street and 4 Golf Road during the works, see maps below.

Notifying residents:

Residents and businesses near the work will receive a letter from the contractors before work starts.

Thanks to our community for your patience and support while we carry out this important work to keep our roads safe and reliable.

Two temporary bus stops are marked near Gold Road and Manley Street. Black arrows indicate the direction of travel for the detour routes. Right map: A different section of Kapiti Road is marked as closed further south near Ocean Road. Pink detour routes redirect buses via Howell Road, Marine Parade, Ocean Road and Seaview Road. Temporary route changes and stop locations are shown with black arrows indicating bus travel directions. A legend along the bottom identifies pink lines as temporary detours, red dashed lines and symbols as closed sections, and pink circles as temporary bus stops.

The weekday detour around the Paekākāriki seawall worksite is back in place and will continue on weekdays for now.

Monday to Friday, a section of The Parade will be closed at the worksite between Paneta Street and Tangahoe Street, with traffic detoured via Paneta Street, Wellington Road and Tangahoe Street.

Residents within the closure area will still be able to access their properties.

The detour will be removed, and The Parade will reopen on weekends when crews are not working.

Traffic management may change depending on the work happening onsite. Please follow all signs and directions from the crew.

The Metlink bus stop near 116 The Parade will be temporarily relocated to north of Tangahoe Street during the works.

Thanks for your patience while this important work continues.

Roadworks

With new housing developments underway in Waikanae North, the developer is constructing a roundabout on Old SH1 between Waikanae and Peka Peka as part of their requirement to provide safe, appropriate access to the site and improve traffic flow.

Construction started early March on the northbound lane and will then switch to the southbound lane.

Construction has taken longer than expected after crews encountered poor ground conditions, followed by periods of wet winter weather. Because the road is being built in layers, each layer

must be tested to ensure it meets engineering and safety standards before work can continue.

Recent testing found parts of the northbound lane need further work before the road can be sealed. Pavement specialists are now reviewing the results and working with the contractor on the best solution.

Expected completion: Early October, subject to the remaining engineering work and testing being completed successfully.

Traffic management: Traffic management is the developer's responsibility.

Due to the limited space between the construction site and the railway line, stop/go traffic management is the only practical way to safely move traffic through the area.

Traffic conditions will continue to be monitored throughout the day, with crews switching from traffic lights to manual stop/go control during busier periods where needed to help reduce queues and keep traffic moving.

Keeping the community informed

The timing of the works and the overall development programme is set by the developer, who is also covering all construction and traffic management costs.

Council has asked the developer to continue working with us to keep the community updated as the project progresses.

Thank you for your patience while these works are completed safely.

A new water bore is being drilled at the Tasman Road Water Treatment Plant to improve drinking water resilience in Ōtaki.

When: Monday 3 August

Duration: 12 to 14 weeks, depending on the weather.

Traffic Management: Stop/go traffic control will be in place for approximately 10 days while contractors prepare the site, move heavy machinery and equipment into place, and change the layout of the road and footpath.

For the duration of the project, there will be an altered lane layout with two-way traffic flow and safe pedestrian access past the worksite. For everyone’s safety, please follow the traffic control instructions.

Thanks to our community for your patience while we carry out this important work.

See our upcoming chipseal resurfacing schedule. This work is to be completed during January–March 2026. All work is dependent on weather and the availability of construction resource. Traffic control will be in place – please follow the direction of site crews.

Tracks and trails

From next Tuesday 27 October, Greater Wellington Regional Council will be removing poplar trees identified as a health and safety concern along the section of the Waikanae River Trail near El Rancho. This work will be weather dependent.

Contractors will be managing the site and sections of the trail will be temporarily closed while trees and branches are being felled.

Please follow all signage and directions from contractors while work is underway. We appreciate your patience.

Facilities

Unfortunately, the public toilets at Chrystalls Bend are temporarily closed after thieves stole the solar batteries and inverters that power the facility overnight (20/21 July 2026).

Police are now investigating.

Without this equipment, the toilets can't operate and will remain closed until further notice.

This is the second time the facility has been targeted. The first theft cost over $48,000 to replace and repair, so Council is facing a similar significant cost.

We're sorry for the inconvenience this causes Chrystalls Bend walkway users.

If you’ve recently seen anything suspicious in the area, please contact Police or report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
