Solar energy programme to strengthen the resilience of our community
15 Jan 2026
We’re partnering with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), WREMO and local community organisations to install solar energy systems in key community buildings across the district.
By July 2026, up to eight community buildings will be fitted with solar photovoltaic panels and storage batteries. The systems will provide a reliable source of power during emergencies or electricity outages, supporting community resilience when it matters most.
We’re working with EECA and community groups to confirm which buildings will be included in the scheme, but it’s likely it’ll include a mix of marae, schools and community halls across our district.
While each building will provide different functions, they’re expected to offer safe places where people will be able to charge phones, prepare food, and potentially store essential medicines and perishable items during outages. Outside of emergency situations, the systems will help reduce electricity costs and lower the carbon footprint of each facility.
EECA is investing up to 75% and we’re investing 25% for the scheme. We’ll own and maintain the systems to ensure long-term reliability.
