Matariki & Early Paekākāriki History Exhibition & Talks
St Peters Village Hall, Paekākāriki, Kapiti Coast

An exhibition showcasing early Paekākāriki history through displays, information, stories, poetry and film. A number of speakers will be presenting talks over the three days. Friday 20 June : 11am - opening; 11:30 - Kaia Hawkins - Matariki, a time of renewal and reflection; 12:15 - Miria Pōmare - Kahe Te Rau-o-te-rangi, a chieftainess of Ngāti Toa who signed Te Tiriti in 1840, and became renowned for her seven mile swim from Kapiti to Te Uruhi (Waikanae) with a child strapped to her back, to raise the alarm when Ngāti Toa were attacked from a war party from the south. 1:30pm - Queen Elizabeth Park - Park Ranger John Tesoriero - restoration projects, wetting of the peat lands, future projects. Saturday 21 June: 1pm - Thane Maxwell and early Māori history in Paekākāriki; 2pm Andy Dodd - stories from an archaeological perspective; 2:45 Poet/storyteller and musician Apirana Taylor. Sunday 22 June: 1pm Jenny Rowan and the Wainuwhenua project; 1:45 Karl Webber and Kapiti Island stories and history; 2:30 Jane Cherry and local stories.
