Council launches events plan to stimulate local economy

An events plan accelerating economic development in Kāpiti will be kicking off next year.

Kāpiti Coast District Council Environment and Community Development committee has approved a new events plan aimed at stimulating economic development in the district through funding major events.

Mayor Ross Church says the plan sets out a way forward for determining the type of events that have long-term economic benefits for Kāpiti, with the contestable fund set to be in place by April 2016.

“We’re focusing on supporting two or three major events each year that bring significant numbers of visitors to our district, as well as providing for the local community,” he says.

The Committee has also decided that after a decade the Sustainable Home and Garden Show has run its course with visitor numbers declining.

“Events have a lifespan and it was time to take a fresh approach. There are other more cost-effective and innovative ways to showcase the extensive environmental sustainability projects the Council and the community undertakes every day,” the Mayor says.

“The fact is ratepayers were paying a subsidy of $30 per entrant on last year’s figures and this is simply unsustainable.

“We’re very proud of our environmental sustainability practices as a Council, and we know it’s something valued in the community. It’s very much part of our core business.”

The Mayor says Council staff is regularly out in the community working with groups and individuals about practical ways of playing their part in making Kāpiti sustainable.

“We will continue to have a strong focus on sustainability. We‘re planning a special exhibit at Waitangi Day and will be bringing back an extended Greener Neighbourhoods competition, as well as other things too.”

A funding request was also considered for a wings and wheels event at Kāpiti Airport in late January, which is a joint venture among Kāpiti Airport, Southwards Car Museum and the Aero Club.

Organisers have liaised with Paraparaumu Beach businesses as the event will increase activity in and around the beach.

The Committee decided to grant $20,000 towards the event, which is expected to attract more than 5,000 visitors and create a positive economic impact for the wider district.
