Update on Kāpiti facilities

The clean-up work is still happening throughout the district following the May 14–15 floods in Kāpiti.

Track repairs

Work is under way (weather permitting) to clean up the network of Kāpiti walking and cycling tracks in the wake of last week’s floods. No major structures have been damaged. The clean-up is likely to continue for some weeks so users can expect to come across work crews and machinery at any time. Full reinstatement of all tracks may not be completed until spring, depending on weather conditions over the winter.

Council contractors will be undertaking repair work in these in these areas:

Nikau Reserve: significant scouring of lower loop track has been repaired. The slip in the bush will be left to heal naturally
A number of slips in the Paraparaumu Escarpment reserve have closed the Epiha Street walkway to Riwai Street
Raumati escarpment reserve: slip on the lower Mataihuka Walkway and the track is scoured up to June Rowland lookout
Wharemauku Walkway: heavy silting on low lying areas and roughing up of track surface
Riwai to Epiha walkway: slips blocking track and side drains
Waikanae River south bank: extensive silting and roughing up of track surface downstream of M2PP Expressway bridge
Waikanae River north bank: extensive silting and roughing up of track surface downstream from Greenaway Road.
Waikanae Park trig track: scouring of loop track has been repaired
Otauraua Reserve: boardwalks have lifted and floated onto playing fields
A geotechnic assessment of Paraparaumu escarpment (above the railway station) is also under way to determine the best approach to repair slip damage.

Ōtaki Gorge Road retaining wall

On Thursday 21 May work starts on extending the retaining wall halfway up Waterfall Road to fix the dropout there caused by last week’s big slip. Work is expected to take three weeks (Monday to Friday only) and there will be a stop/go closure in place while this happens.

Play areas

Thursday 21 May we’ll begin removing the old combination tower and slides play structure at Maclean Park and replace it with a new structure. While the rest of the playground will be open for public use, we ask people to stay clear of the work site.
On Monday 25 May the Marine Gardens splash pad will be turned off for the winter. We expect to turn it on again for summer on 25 September.

Wastewater treatment plant

The storm pond at the Paraparaumu treatment plant is still around 40% full of diluted untreated waste water and is starting to smell. We are putting the remaining water through the treatment process slowly so we don’t upset our precious bacteria. Once the pond is empty we will spread lime over the area to kill the smell. We appreciate the patience of local residents.
