Work to establish raised pedestrian crossing taking shape in Raumati South Village

Work to establish a raised pedestrian crossing on Poplar Avenue outside the Raumati Social Club and Gatsby Tapas is taking shape.

The raised pedestrian crossing will replace the existing zebra crossing and will help create a slow zone through the Raumati South Village.

Infrastructure Services Group Manager Sean Mallon says work to upgrade the pavement and establish pram ramps on the south side of Poplar Avenue in preparation for the raised pedestrian crossing to be constructed is almost complete.

“Over the next week our contractors will repeat the process of the north side before building up the road surface where the existing zebra crossing is to create the raised crossing.

“Our contractors are not quite where they expected to be at this point but as long as the weather holds we expect that they will pick up the pace,” Mr Mallon said.

Traffic management is in place in the Raumati South Village and the Council is urging people to take extra care around the construction site.

“We know our continued presence on Poplar Avenue is not ideal and want to thank everyone for being so patient,” Mr Mallon said.

“To maintain pedestrian access in the area we will be establishing a temporary pedestrian crossing slightly to the east of the existing zebra crossing to allow the new raised crossing to be constructed safely.”

The Council’s work to improve pedestrian safety in the Raumati South Village forms part of a series of safety improvements and traffic calming measures that are being implemented on Poplar Avenue.

A 2.5 metre shared path has been delivered on the north side of Poplar Avenue between Matai and Glen Roads and work to establish a right-turn bay on Poplar Avenue for traffic turning into Leinster Avenue from the east is in the planning stages.

Mr Mallon said the Council will also be carrying out a review of the speed limit on Poplar Avenue in response to community feedback early next year.
