Cultural thread works begin in Waikanae

As part of the Kāpiti Coast District Council’s work to make improvements to the Waikanae town centre, this week construction kicks off on the ‘cultural thread.’

“These works focus on better integrating the town centre with Whakarongotai Marae, and embedding the cultural identity, history and heritage of Te Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai in the Waikanae area,” says Group Manager Infrastructure Services Sean Mallon.

“Our works will take place in the area between the Greater Wellington Park and Ride commuter car park, past the Marae and through to Mahara Place. We’ll be working from April through to June 2018 to create gardens for people to sit and relax, lay distinctive paving and improve street lighting.

“During the work some areas will be cordoned off so our contractors can access the site and work safely,” says Mr Mallon. “We’ll need to temporarily restrict some of the customer parking for the Bookshelf, Kāpiti Drycleaners and the BNZ. There will be some signposted changes for pedestrians. Alternative access points will be in place to make sure everyone can still get from A to B.”
