Feral geese are removed from Waimanu Lagoon

The Kāpiti Coast District Council and HUHA successfully rounded up a gaggle of 45 feral geese at Waimanu Lagoons in Waikanae over the weekend and rehomed them.

HUHA founder Carolyn Press-McKenzie led the capture team that corralled the geese then caught and put them onto a horse float for transport to their new homes. Parks and Recreation Manager Alison Law says that Council staff installed a capture pen and fed the geese in the pen for four days prior to capture in order to acclimatise them.

“The capture went smoothly without any injuries to birds or people. Hats off to HUHA for working with us to achieve the best possible outcome to the challenges feral geese were causing in and around the Waimanu Lagoons.”

“Some residents had requested that a few geese were left at the lagoons to enjoy, so two females remain,” Ms Law says.

The 45 captured geese were transported to approved rural homes in Kimbolton, Palmerston North, Eketahuna, and Kaitoke.
