Summer Reading Programme
It's almost time for keen young readers to register for the Kāpiti Coast District Libraries' popular Summer Reading Programme and places always fill quickly. Registrations for 'Wild about Reading' open on Friday 1 December and will be open until Saturday 16 December.
Libraries and Arts Manager Kat Cuttriss says the programme is a fun and interactive way for kids to get involved in reading over summer.
"Our programme encourages school children to continue to practice their reading over the long summer holiday break when they can otherwise lose momentum with their reading."
She says the librarians use their expertise and experience to find reading material that will engage the youngsters and encourage a love of reading.
"We have some fantastic, friendly librarians who'll be there to help as kids move through the programme. This year we've also got over 20 'volunteens' helping out – local teenagers who've volunteered their time to help support the kids over the four weeks of the programme."
The programme is for children aged 5 to 12 and aims to:
• keep up reading practice over the long summer holiday
• promote reading as a fun thing to do
• introduce children to the library's extensive book collection and possibly extend reading interest and skill levels.
"If your kids are keen to take part we need a parent or caregiver to pop into a local library to register in person, or you can register online here:
Once registered, call in at your local library to pick up your booklet, choose some books, and start reading. Kids will need to report-in weekly from 3-26 January on the books they have read, to receive fun prizes. All children who report-in four times will get a brand new book to keep, and an invitation to the Summer Reading Programme Finale party, held at Waikanae Pools on Thursday 1 February at 4pm.
"This is a great, free initiative. We encourage local kids to sign up to the programme, and we really enjoy the chance to get to know our District's children and their families over the relaxed summer holiday period."
