Gathering Taiohi Voices Report 2026
What we’ve heard from young people living in Kāpiti
In 2025, more than 1,000 young people (taiohi) from across the Kāpiti Coast completed the Youth Survey, sharing what matters most to them and what would make life better for taiohi in our district.
Taiohi told us they value Kāpiti Coast's:
Strong sense of community
cultural diversity
access to nature.
Many taiohi feel supported by their whānau and friends, and described the district as friendly, welcoming, and a great place to grow up.
The survey also highlighted some clear priorities for young people:
Safe places to spend time
Safety, particularly at night, is a concern. Taiohi want more safe, welcoming places where they can connect with friends and feel comfortable being themselves.
Affordable access to opportunities
The cost of transport, activities, and services can be a barrier. Taiohi want more affordable options and easier access to the things they need.
Employment opportunities and pathways
Many taiohi said it can be difficult to find jobs, work experience, internships, and clear pathways into employment.
More spaces and activities for taiohi
There is strong interest in youth-friendly spaces, events, creative opportunities, recreational facilities, and places to simply hang out and connect.
Being involved in decisions
Many taiohi want more opportunities to contribute to decisions that affect them and to be involved in shaping services, projects, and spaces.
Inclusive communities
Taiohi value diversity and want communities where everyone feels respected, included, and able to express their identity and culture.
These findings provide a useful reminder that taiohi interact with many different Council services, spaces, and decisions. Whether we're planning projects, designing services, engaging with communities, or developing strategy, there are always opportunities across Council to consider the needs, experiences, and perspectives of taiohi.
