It’s been a busy start to September around the district.

Last week I attended the Ōtaki and Kāpiti Principles Association hui where the leaders of our schools and colleges gather to catch up and talk about their collective work. This inspiring group of leaders have significant shared challenges.

We talked about the pressures of growth in the district, and a lack of planning around providing the services those people are going to need from Central Government, particularly health and education resources. I’m looking forward to continuing to advocate for increased support for our schools and communities as our district grows.

On Wednesday ANZ Chief Economist presented her yearly update at the Electra Business Breakfast, with a message that the economy is slowly recovering. Locally and nationally, the economic downturn has been difficult for many, intensified by the mass layoffs in Wellington meaning a lot less spending in the region. This sign that change is on the way will be welcome news to our local businesses who have been weathering tough times.

After the breakfast there was an opening event for the new Zero Waste Facility in Otaihanga. This innovation promises to divert tonnes of waste from landfills and is also a vibrant hub for learning and connection. Open Monday through Saturday, the site not only processes building materials but also accepts a variety of other materials and items to be recycled or re-purposed.

This has happened thanks to a venture between KCDC, Sustainability Trust, and Localised.  Thanks to all who have made this a reality, and I look forward to seeing it grow.

On Friday Mowbray Collectibles held a celebration to mark 50 years in business. It was incredible to hear about the history and scale of the business, which was a pioneer of the Ōtaki commercial sector.

They’ve seen so much change and history over their years, and have embraced every technological advance, installing the first photocopier and first fax machine in the township.  Congratulations to John Mowbray and the team on this huge milestone.

To top the week off, on Saturday Senior Officer John Mills received a Gold Star award for 25 years of service to the Waikanae Fire Brigade. Congratulation to John and heartfelt thanks to all the members for their significant contribution to the safety and resilience of our community.
