Bringing neighbours together, one cuppa at a time

28 Jan 2026

Our annual initiative is back!

Supported by Kāpiti Coast District Council and Neighbours Aotearoa, Over the Fence Cuppa encourages people to organise an event in their street or surrounds and creates opportunities for neighbours to get to know each other better.

It’s about getting to know the people who live closest to make our communities happier, safer, and better prepared to support each other when it matters most.

How can I get involved?

All you need to do is register to host an event before 25 February and Council will provide you with everything you need to get started, making hosting easy.

This year Cuppa events can be held anytime between Friday 6 March and Sunday 29 March. You decide the time and place – it might be in someone’s garden, on your berms at the end of your street, or in a nearby park. Whatever works for you.

Why would I get to know my neighbours through this initiative?

We encourage you to get to know your neighbours both through this initiative and outside of it. The cool thing about Over the Fence Cuppas is that Council can support you plan your day…. and there’s not set format!

We’ve had neighbours work with council to host WREMO emergency preparedness classes, composting demonstrations, beach clean-ups, BBQ’s and anything in-between. There are even street games and chalk to borrow if you want to keep it simple and social. It’s up to you, and the possibilities are endless!

Why it matters

Not only does knowing your neighbour's foster friendship, happiness and encourage but it encouraged community resilience, particularly in the face of emergencies or natural disasters.

During an earthquake or flood, emergency services will be dealing with the most urgent matters, so the people you live nearest to will be your most immediate and ongoing source of support.

Community resilience is important, and as your council, enhancing community strength and wellbeing is a big part of what we do.

These events can help you:

  • Build connections
  • Learn what skills or resources your neighbours have
  • Understand where your nearest community hub is
  • Feel more prepared and connected should an emergency occur

Post-event friendly competition

This year we’re inviting all neighbourhoods who held an event to send in a photo, and a short statement about what they love most about their community.

You’ll go in the draw to win a free mini golf session from Golf for Good (sponsored).
