Why this work is needed
Over time, traffic, weather and ageing materials cause roads to deteriorate. While pothole repairs, patching and resurfacing can address surface wear, there comes a point when these treatments are no longer effective or cost-efficient. Road rehabilitation renews the underlying road structure, restoring its strength and improving long-term performance.
Rather than continuing with short-term repairs on sections of Waitohu Valley Road and Ōtaki Gorge Road, we're investing in a more durable solution that strengthens the pavement layers beneath the road surface. This will extend the life of the road, improve resilience and reduce the need for ongoing maintenance, helping to avoid more extensive and costly work in the future.
We'll rehabilitate approximately 1,941 metres of road, improving road condition, drainage, ride quality, resilience and safety for everyone who uses it.

What to expect
Work will generally take place from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday. If Saturday work is needed, affected residents will be notified in advance.
This work will be disruptive. Depending on the location and stage of construction, people may experience:
stop/go traffic controls and lane closures
reduced speed limits and travel delays
temporary road closures and signposted detours, if required
construction noise, dust and vibration
temporary restrictions to driveway or property access.
Please follow temporary signs and directions from traffic management staff and allow extra time for your journey.
Property access
We’ll maintain property access wherever practicable. Affected residents and property owners will be contacted before work that may temporarily restrict driveway access. Traffic management staff and the construction crew will assist with access where possible.
Thank you for your patience while we complete this important work.
