Peka Peka cycleway safety improvements

We’re making changes to Peka Peka Road to improve cycling safety.

Running from the old state highway roundabout to Paetawa Road, Peka Peka Road is approximately 2.4km long. It’s part of the Kāpiti Coast Cycle Route [PDF 1.91 MB].

Because of its narrow road lanes, Peka Peka Road has been identified as a priority area for cycleway improvements.

We will eventually widen the lanes and seal the shoulders on both sides of the road, but due to funding availability, we will stage the works by improving the areas of highest need first.

A recent safety engineering process identified two corners with low sight visibility and limited road run off in the event of an incident. At these locations, we will widen the vehicle lanes and build a 1.5m wide sealed shoulder. Approximately 500m of the road will be widened on both sides of the road.

As funding becomes available, we will complete the road widening to provide a safer cycle path along the remaining length of the road.

All going well, construction will begin in February 2026 and will be finished around June 2026.
