Whitebaiting
Whitebaiting is a popular activity on the Kāpiti Coast, but it's important to take care of our environment and follow the rules when accessing whitebaiting spots.
This change helps protect the most endangered whitebait species during their peak migration. You can learn more on DOC's website at Summary of whitebait fishing regulations.
Accessing whitebaiting spots
If you’re heading to the Waikanae Scientific Reserve, you should park your car near the pedestrian access points, and walk to your favourite spot. There are rules that limit driving on the beaches protect plants, animals and people. See Looking after our beaches for more.
Greater Wellington (GW) controls the coastal marine area under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). They have rules in place that limit driving on certain parts of the beach, and especially around ecologically sensitive areas like river mouths. These rules help protect the environment and habitat whitebait need to grow. For more information, please contact them.
DOC also controls the Waikanae Scientific Reserve and doesn't allow motor vehicles in the reserve unless you get special permission.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact those agencies.
See Vehicles on the beach maps to see where you can drive on our beaches.
