Paraparaumu Library Play Space
The children’s area at Paraparaumu Library has been transformed into a vibrant, welcoming Library Play space designed especially for tamariki and whānau.
The children’s literature collection has been relocated to the western end of the building and paired with a fully fenced, rainbow-themed outdoor play space. This colourful area includes shade sails, slides, real grass, flowers, swan plants, and even caterpillars – creating a playful environment that encourages exploration, movement, and connection with nature.
Why it's special
A space designed for play and learning
The Library Play space was created to complement the children’s collection and support longer, more relaxed library visits where whānau can chill, read, play, and enjoy activities together in their local Library Hub.
A custom-made LED Kiwicorn light, created by the Paraparaumu Library Makerspace team, guides visitors to the outdoor breakout area and adds a touch of magic along the way.
Community collaboration
The outdoor garden boxes, currently home to Monarch butterfly cocoons, were built by the local Shed Project, an organisation that provides training and employment opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged people in our community.
A living plant teepee reading nook, built by our Parks team, will soon become a natural, magical reading spot for tamariki to enjoy.
The project was made possible through the combined efforts of our library staff, and our Property and Parks teams, transforming the outdoor area into a lively, laughter-filled space ideal for preschoolers and families.
