Aroha Quartet and Friends
Waikanae Memorial Hall, Waikanae, Kapiti Coast

The popular Wellington-based Aroha String Quartet (violinists Haihong LIu and Konstanze Artmann. violist Zongxian Jin and cellist Robert Ibell) will be joined by four colleagues from the NZSO and Orchestra Wellington to present a rare performance of Schubert's famous Octet for Wind and Strings. This very substantial work of just under an hour's length has six movements, all of them brimming with warmth, charm and glorious melody. There is a wide variety of tonal colour as each of the instruments in turn shares the limelight, with delightful solo lines from violins, viola, cello, clarinet, bassoon, horn and double-bass. The clarinetist will be Nick Walshe, Justin Sun the bassoonist, joined by Alexander Hambleton (horn) and Oleksandr Gunchenko (double-bass). Also on the programme will be a string quartet by Mozart (No 22 in B flat, K589) and a humorous light-hearted piece by Danish composer Carl Nielsen called "Serenata in Vano" in which a group of musicians attempt. unsuccessfully, to attract the attention of a young woman.
