River City Express

Travel to the beautiful riverside town of Whanganui, hauled by both steam locomotive Ab 608 and heritage diesel electric locomotive Da 1410. Choose between doing your own thing or jumping on a serene cruise of the Whanganui River on board the coal-fired paddle steamer "PS Waimarie". Leaving Kapiti, as most others are still sound asleep, we quickly escape the coast and delve into the rurality of the Horowhenua. After a stop in Palmerston North, we head up the trunk through the townships of Feilding and Marton before turning onto the Marton - New Plymouth railway line for the last stretch into Whanganui. After crossing the 290km long Whanganui River, we proceed slowly down the short 5km branch line taking us to Taupo Quay. From here, it's up to you what you wish to do! - Sail On The Queen Of The River - Waimarie This option includes a river cruise aboard the coal-fired paddle steamer Waimarie, restored after around 50 years submerged. The cruise features commentary on Whanganui’s river history, and you can view the boiler and possibly send a message via homing pigeon. The fare covers return train travel, bus transfers, and the cruise. Departing Paekakariki/Paraparaumu/Waikanae/Otaki/Levin Adult 13+ yrs - $209 Child 2-12yrs - $179 Departing Palmerston North/Feilding Adult 13+ yrs - $189 Child 2-12yrs - $169 An Artisan Lunch for Two - $35 add-on OR - Do Your Own Thing & Explore Whanganui You’ll be transferred by bus to the Riverboat Centre and can explore Whanganui on foot or by hiring a vintage cruiser bike. Attractions include the Durie Hill Elevator, Riverboat Museum, NZ Glassworks, Motua Gardens, and local shops and eateries. A tram ride is also available for a small fee. This option includes train fare and bus transfers. Fares Departing Paekakariki/Paraparaumu/Waikanae/Otaki/Levin Adult 13+ yrs - $159 Child 2-12yrs - $139 Departing Palmerston North/Feilding Adult 13+ yrs - $139 Child 2-12yrs - $119 -Evening Meal Sandy and the team at the Station Hotel will be on hand to provide an evening meal at your seat on departure from Marton. Being served is a tasty chicken salad main, a freshly baked mini baguette, along with a sweet chocolate brownie to cleanse the palate!
