Māori collections at Kāpiti Libraries

He ara ki ngā rauemi me ngā ratonga Māori.

Te Matahīapo

Each of our three branch libraries has an Adult Māori section (Te Matahīapo). Te Matahīapo is a collection of non-fiction material. The core collection is held at Ōtaki. Te Matahīapo supports individual learning of Te Ao Māori (the Māori world) by providing material of cultural, historical, social and language significance.

Mātahi

Mātahi is the Kāpiti Coast District Libraries' Junior Māori Collection of fiction and non-fiction. The collection is located in the Childrens and Teens area in Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Ōtaki libraries. The Mātahi Collection is available to all library users.

Bilingual storytimes take place on the second Tuesday of each month at Ōtaki Library, 10.30-11am.

Te Ao Māori

Some of the most popular Māori authors, filmmakers and publications are available in our libraries.

Many more books with a Māori theme or content can be found in the library collections.

We suggest:

  • Search the library catalogue using a list of key words relating to your topic of interest i.e. raranga resources would include keywords like harakeke, flax, weaving, raranga, whatu, mahi toi, Puketapu, Pendergrast, Diggeress etc...
  • Read the pathfinder (poster/brochure).
  • Browse Te Matahiāpo (adult) & Mātahi (children’s) collections.
  • Talk to the Māori Collections librarian or the librarian on duty.
