Let’s read our way to one million minutes!

This year, we want the whole Kāpiti community to help us reach a giant goal: one million minutes of reading. The Kāpiti Summer Reading Challenge – Te Wero Pānui Raumati runs until 6 February 2026, and everyone's welcome to jump in anytime! Tamariki, teens, parents, grandparents – every reading minute counts!

How to play

Pick up your Summer Reading Challenge pack [PDF 2.66 MB] from your local library to start.

Then:

  • Put a copy of our Activities Calendar [PDF 734 KB] on your fridge so you don't miss out!
  • Explore our awesome collections and load up on books.
  • Complete a challenge from our Summer Reading Bingo [PDF 1.28 MB] list.
  • Read anywhere you want – up a tree, at the beach, on a trampoline, under the blankets.
  • Log your reading minutes on the reading log in the activity booklet or log your reading minutes online to help our total grow and enter our prize draw. 
  • Get your friends and whānau involved to help boost our reading minutes together.

Bonus time!

  • Join in our library hub activities for extra bonus minutes (calendar below).
  • The more you visit, the more minutes you can earn!
  • Finish more Bingo challenges for even more bonus minutes.

Get extra bonus minutes with our summer reading activities

Our school holiday activities are designed to be accessible and inclusive for all children. We aim to provide quiet spaces for children with sensory needs, as well as different options to join in the activities.

Please note:

  • Children under 8 years old must be actively supervised by a parent or caregiver when on library premises or at one of our library events.
  • Children between 8 and 14 years old must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver who stays in the library building or at the event location and can be easily and quickly reached by the child if needed.
