Help is there for those in need in Kāpiti – but please play it safe

Published 23 Aug 2021

Kāpiti Coast District Council Mayor K Gurunathan is reminding people how to safely access help during this latest resurgence of COVID-19.

“Here in Kāpiti, we’re seeing cases of people who have really good intentions and want to help. This shows the kindness of our Kāpiti communities, but we need to do everything we can to keep vunerable people safe,” said Mayor Gurunathan.

“The Delta variant of COVID-19 is much more transmissible and dangerous than previous variants. It makes people sicker and puts them at a higher of needing hospitalisation and invasive treatments. It would be tragic if a well-meaning person unknowingly infected someone they were trying to help.

“If you need help or support, please reach out to the following organisations and people before accepting help from other members of our community.”

Organisations offering help include:

  • MSD for financial support on their general line 0800 559 009, or 0800 552 002 for seniors 65+
  • Kapiti Foodbank – 10am - 12pm, Monday to Friday, pickups only, 04 298 1907
  • Ōtaki Foodbank - 9am - 12pm, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday, 06 364 0051
  • Salvation Army - open for social service and basic food needs, 04-297 1436
  • Atiawa ki Whakarongotai Charitable Trust - call 04 293 5138 if you or your whānau need someone to kōrero with
  • Age Concern New Zealand on 0800 652 105.

“Friends, family, whānau and neighbours are also great people to talk to to see if they could deliver essential items to you.”

“If none of those options work out, there are some community organisations, such as churches, clubs and groups, coordinating support in various ways. You can find out who they are and how to contact them via various community noticeboards.”

For urgent assistance on a Council matter, phone our contact centre on 0800 486 486 (call 111 if it’s an emergency). For non-urgent matters, please email us at [email protected] or contact us via the Antenno app. Please note response times may be a little slower than usual for non-urgent matters.
