Purpose

The Greener Neighbourhoods programme encourages community connection, local sustainability action, and community preparedness within Kāpiti communities.

The programme is a great way to develop neighbourhood relationships and build a sense of real community. Greener Neighbourhoods groups can create positive impact through collaboration on a practical sustainability project, and learn about opportunities for household cost savings, emergency preparedness, and more.

How does the programme work?

The Greener Neighbourhoods programme runs for about 7 months, from May until November, with registrations opening in March.

Neighbourhood groups of five or more households apply to participate. During the programme, groups take part in a range of workshops and learning events, and receive funding and expert advice to complete a neighbourhood sustainability project of their choice.

Previous Greener Neighbourhood groups have worked on projects such as predator control and ecosystem restoration, community tool libraries, community kai swaps, gardening and composting projects, and improving home energy efficiency.

What previous participants are saying

"It's a great collaboration between council, neighbourhoods and the wider community to help create genuinely resilient, sustainable and connected neighbourhood environments. The resilience and community spirit that results lasts long after the end of the challenges."

"Our home is now much more focused on reducing waste and consumption in lots of ways we hadn’t thought about before. Our power bills have gone down, we use the car less and now compost and grow our own food. We’re really thinking about the true impact of what we buy."

"We had regular gardening bees, moving around the houses and often ending with a pot luck meal. We found it a fantastic way to get to know people, and made great friendships."

"The best part of Greener Neighbourhoods for me was really getting to know the people in my street, mostly through a series of garden-focused workshops."
