Are you an experienced Transport Planner with a passion for safety. Are you ready to lead a dynamic team?

Come and join our Access and Transport Team as our Team Leader Transport Planning and Safety.

Reporting to the Manager Access and Transport, this key technical leadership role leads 2-4 staff to support the delivery of a well-managed, safe, planned, and integrated transport network.

This role leads strategic transport planning and the safe management of the Council’s roading network. This includes managing the Sustainable Transport Strategy and supporting the Activity Management Plan and Long-Term Plan processes.

This role ensures land development applications are assessed to meet Councils roading standards and are aligned with Council’s transport strategic direction.

The position oversees our safety delivery, including the procurement and delivery of network safety analysis, low-cost low-risk programme, and speed management initiatives.

As a technical leader, this role provides guidance and advice across the Access & Transport Team and the wider Council on strategic transport planning, helping the team operate as a high-performing unit committed to high-quality, cost-effective service delivery and customer satisfaction.

Nā tōu rourou | What you will bring


To excel in this role, you will have at least 10 years experience in transport planning, civil engineering, and/or transport safety. You will hold a tertiary qualification in a relevant planning, civil engineering or transport safety discipline and a current and valid NZ Driver licence.

You’ll also bring strong knowledge of and experience in:
  • management and transport engineering principles, legislation and documents.
  • Transport safety and speed management principles,
  • Sound knowledge of NZTA/Waka Kotahi and Council processes and procedures.
  • Managing budgets, draft applications, preparing reports and proposals, and performance reporting.
  • Effective leadership and communication skills
