Help reduce waste and create positive environmental outcomes for Kāpiti in a varied, community-focused role with real impact.
 Te tūranga | The Opportunity

Want to help reduce waste, support resource recovery, and contribute to practical environmental outcomes for the Kāpiti Coast?

We’re looking for a motivated Waste Minimisation Support Officer to join our Waste Projects team on a 12-month, fixed-term basis. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience in waste minimisation, sustainability, environmental programmes, data, administration, or project support who wants to help deliver real-world outcomes for the community.

In this role, you will support the delivery of Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, assist with waste licensing and reporting, support community education and engagement activities, and help the team deliver waste minimisation and resource recovery projects across the district.

You’ll work alongside the Waste Projects team and report to the Manager Waste Projects. The team works across a broad range of waste and resource recovery activities, including transfer stations, kerbside licensing, waste data, community initiatives, waste education, bylaw implementation, and regional waste projects.

This is a varied role where no two days are quite the same. You may be helping analyse waste data one day, supporting a community event the next, and assisting with project or contractor administration after that.

Nā tōu rourou | What you will bring

To excel in this role, you’ll bring strong organisational skills, a practical can-do attitude, and an interest in waste minimisation, sustainability, and community outcomes. You’ll be comfortable working with data, people, systems, and projects, and you’ll hold a current and valid New Zealand driver licence.

The role is somewhat flexible and can be aligned with a diverse and big work program depending on your skills, which should include experience in some of the following areas:
  • Waste minimisation, resource recovery, sustainability, environmental management, or a related field.
  • Data collection, reporting, administration, or records management.
  • Project coordination or project support.
  • Working with contractors, service providers, community groups, or external stakeholders.
  • Customer service and responding to public enquiries.
  • Preparing written material, reports, webpages, education material, or communications.
  • Using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Supporting events, workshops, meetings, or community engagement activities.
  • Working independently, managing competing priorities, and following through on tasks.
  • Understanding of local government, environmental policy, or regulatory processes would be an advantage.
Most importantly, you’ll be someone who is curious, organised, community-minded, and keen to contribute to better waste outcomes for Kāpiti.

If you’re excited to work in a practical, community-focused team environment and want to help make waste minimisation happen on the ground, we’d love to hear from you.
