Lost Wax in Three - Mitsuro Hikime Wax

Workspace Studios Ōtaki, Ōtaki, Kapiti Coast

FRI 26 JUN 5:30 P.M. - 8:30 P.M.

Discover the magic of Mitsuro Hikime — the beautiful Japanese technique that uses a special stretchy wax to create flowing, organic textures unlike anything else in jewellery-making. Over three inspiring sessions, you’ll learn how to transform this fascinating material into stunning wearable pieces using the traditional lost wax casting process. Mitsuro Hikime wax behaves very differently from standard jeweller’s wax. Warm and pliable, it can be stretched, twisted and pulled into delicate ribbons and natural textures that resemble flowing water, bark, roots or molten metal. The results are beautifully organic and wonderfully unpredictable, making every piece completely unique. During the first two sessions, you’ll learn how to handle and shape this traditional Japanese wax, exploring different techniques to create rings, pendants or small sculptural objects full of movement and texture. Once your designs are complete, your waxes will be professionally cast in the metal of your choice. There is then a one-week break before the final session to allow time for casting. In the third class, you’ll learn how to cut, file, sand and finish your cast pieces, transforming them into polished jewellery ready to wear, gift or treasure. This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as more experienced makers wanting to experiment with this exciting and expressive technique. More advanced students are also welcome to use the sessions to develop independent projects in a supportive studio environment. Included in the class fee are all Mitsuro Hikime waxes, consumables, sandpaper and courier costs. Please note that casting and metal costs are not included, as these vary depending on the size of your piece and the metal selected. Small castings generally cost around $6.65–$12, with metal costs ranging approximately from $8–$30 depending on whether you choose red bronze, white bronze or silver. This class is great for young folks aged around 12 and up. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an enrolled parent or caregiver.
