Storm repair work rounding out

Published 16 Aug 2016

Repair works following the significant storm event in Kāpiti in August are finished and long term solutions are still being considered.

The timber wall on Raumati Beach, in front of the Waterfront Bar, has been replaced.

The wall had been weather-damaged over the years and deteriorated further during the stormy weather, which hit Kāpiti. Council had already scheduled the wall to be replaced, but the works were brought forward due to damage from the storm.

Surveyors are continuing to look at options for a more permanent solution to repair the beach accessway that leads to the Arawa Walkway, off Wharemauku Street in Paraparaumu, which was washed away in the wild weather. Two-tonne concrete blocks were put in place immediately after the storm, but only as a temporary measure to stop further erosion.

Infrastructure Services Group Manager Sean Mallon say it was a significant weather event Kāpiti that caused some serious damage along the district's coastline.

"This was between a 1 in 30 to a 1 in 50-year storm, and we've been really impressed with how quickly council staff and contractors responded to get crucial work finished before we got more projected bad weather."

Two further pieces of work, carried out as a result of storm damage, are now finished including:

  • installation of a temporary concrete structure along 170m of Paraparaumu South beach, to protect a sewer line exposed by the storm (completed 28 July)
  • repair of erosion under the road at The Parade, Paekākāriki (completed 28 July).

Costs of these works and some other minor works to address storm damage are $118,880 (for completed work) and $50,000 (for work which will be completed soon).
