Risk of slip on Waterfall Road in Paraparaumu closes road

Published 18 Sep 2017

Kāpiti Coast District Council has closed Waterfall Road as monitoring reveals that the site of previous
slips is potentially on the move again.

The road has been closed at MacKay’s Crossing and the bottom of Maungakotukutuku Road, so
there is no through access between Emerald Glen Road and Valley Road due to the high possibility of
a slip occurring.

Infrastructure Services Manager Sean Mallon says that the Council has been monitoring the area
after carrying out work on making it secure after the last major slip.

“Monitoring shows that the slip has started to move again, compounded by the exceptional amount
of rainfall Kāpiti has had this year. So in the realm of public safety, we are closing the road while we
start works to prevent the situation from getting worse.”

Safety is clearly our primary concern here. Once we have carried out further assessment, we will
have a clearer picture of how much material we need to remove and how long the road closure may
be.”
