As a Building Officer, you will:

• Provide professional and technical advice to customers and stakeholders.
• Assess building consent applications and supporting documentation.
• Undertake building inspections to ensure compliance with approved consents.
• Support the administration and delivery of functions under the Building Act 2004.
• Contribute to maintaining Council's accreditation as a Building Consent Authority (BCA).
• Help ensure high-quality customer service while meeting statutory timeframes.

The Strategy and Growth Group brings together Council's sustainable development functions, creating a collective focus on delivering "good growth" for the Kāpiti Coast.
You will work alongside a team of experienced Building Officers and report to either the Building Approvals Lead or Building Inspections Lead. Depending on your skills, experience, and competencies, the position may focus on building consent processing, inspections, or a combination of both.
The Building Officer plays a key role in the local regulatory system by assessing, inspecting, and providing advice to support safe, compliant, and sustainable development. Together, our team ensures Building Consent Authority and Territorial Authority functions are delivered efficiently, professionally, and in accordance with legislative requirements.
  

Nā tōu rourou | What you will bring

To succeed in this role, you will have experience within the building industry, building environment, or a related regulatory field, along with a current and valid New Zealand driver's licence.
You will also bring:

• Knowledge of building industry practices, building plans, and specifications.
• Strong customer service skills and a commitment to achieving positive outcomes.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Sound analytical, assessment, and decision-making abilities.
• Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
• Competency in Microsoft applications and the ability to quickly learn Council systems.
• The ability to build productive relationships with customers, contractors, designers, property owners, and other stakeholders.
• An understanding of quality assurance systems and continuous improvement principles.
• Knowledge of, or willingness to develop expertise in, the Building Act 2004, Building Code, relevant regulations, and associated standards.
• An awareness and understanding of Māori perspectives and issues within a local government environment.
• A commitment to contributing to Council's ongoing Building Consent Authority accreditation requirements.

Applicants may already hold a qualification that meets Regulation 18 requirements, be working towards obtaining one, or be willing to undertake the necessary study to become qualified.
