Help deliver safe drinking water to the Kāpiti Coast while building a rewarding career in essential infrastructure services.

Te tūranga | The Opportunity

Kāpiti Coast District Council is looking for a motivated Water Treatment Specialist to join our Water and Wastewater Services team. We welcome applications from experienced water treatment professionals as well as graduate or junior candidates who are keen to build a career in essential infrastructure services and make a real difference for the community.

Working within our Infrastructure Services Group, you will help operate and maintain treatment plants, supplementary and emergency bores, and monitor water quality across the network. Whether you bring established experience or are developing your career, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to public health, operational performance, and compliance with drinking water and resource consent requirements.

In this role, you will support the operation, monitoring, maintenance, and continuous improvement of water treatment systems to ensure safe and efficient plant performance. For experienced candidates, this is an opportunity to bring strong technical capability and operational leadership. For graduate or junior applicants, this is a chance to learn from an experienced team and build practical skills in water treatment operations, compliance, reporting, and asset care.

This is a rostered role with participation in a 24/7 standby system, so we are looking for someone who is flexible, safety-focused, and ready to work as part of a team delivering essential services. Support and development will be important for those earlier in their career, while experienced applicants will have the opportunity to apply their expertise in a critical operational environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and monitor water treatment plants and associated systems.
  • Carry out inspections, sampling, testing, calibration checks, and performance monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and compliance reporting.
  • Respond to alarms, incidents, and water quality issues.
  • Support preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Help ensure compliance with drinking water, consent, and health and safety requirements.
  • Contribute positively to team performance and customer service outcomes.
Nā tōu rourou | What you will bring

To excel in this role, you will bring strong knowledge of and experience in:
  • Experience in water treatment, utilities, industrial operations, or a similar environment is valued, but we also welcome applications from graduate or junior candidates with a strong interest in developing in this field.
  • An interest in water treatment processes, public health, compliance, and safe operating practices.
  • A willingness to learn, take direction, and contribute positively as part of a team.
  • For experienced applicants, the ability to apply sound technical judgement, troubleshoot issues, and support continuous improvement.
  • Mechanical or electrical aptitude, practical problem-solving ability, and confidence working in an operational environment.
  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office, and ideally some familiarity with PLC or SCADA systems.
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-focused, professional approach.
  • A current and valid New Zealand driver licence relevant to the role, or the ability to obtain one where appropriate.
  • Relevant certifications or qualifications in water treatment are highly regarded, but support for training and development may be available for the right candidate.
