'Darth Cocoa' warms hearts across Kāpiti
1 Aug 2025
Congratulations to Rosetta Café, crowned the winner of the Kāpiti Hot Chocolate Competition 2025 with their decadent creation, “Darth Cocoa.”
Running from 28 June to 13 July, the competition saw 28 local cafés and eateries from Ōtaki to Paekākāriki whip up their most creative and indulgent hot chocolates.
Sponsored by The Kāpiti Chocolate Factory and driven by our Economic Development team, the competition proved to be more than just a sweet treat, it was a shot of economic energy during a slow winter season.
More than 650 community votes were cast online, and a whopping 10,000 hot chocolates were consumed across the district in just two weeks. The initiative, which cost Council just $2,500, is estimated to have generated $100,000 for the local economy.
“Winter is traditionally a challenging season for the hospitality sector,” said Neil MacKay, Chair, Economic Development Kotahitanga Board. “With a strategic investment of just $2,500, we launched an initiative that brought together 28 local businesses, generating a $100,000 boost to the economy. It was a smart, collaborative move that supported local operators, attracted foot traffic, and kept money circulating in our community when it was needed most.”
Rosetta Café, located in Raumati South, pulled out all the stops with their winning drink “Darth Cocoa”, a rich and theatrical concoction that quickly captured the public’s taste buds and imagination.

Letitia Thomas, Owner & Head Chef of Rosetta Café, said: “This time of year, the weather can deter customers, but the Hot Chocolate Competition created excellent foot traffic and a great choccy environment. It was a very busy two weeks; we even had to get extra staff! I’m a creative nerd, so really enjoyed the process of developing an exciting new drink. I’m already planning for next year!”
Cafés across the district reported queues out the door, with several venues serving over 450 hot chocolates each. The contest drew support not only from Kāpiti locals, but also from visitors across the greater Wellington region.
The competition highlighted the power of collaboration, between local government, small businesses, and a community of passionate chocolate lovers. It’s clear that when Kāpiti comes together, incredible things (and drinks) happen.
See Visit Kāpiti for other events happening in the district including Visa Wellington on a Plate – Kāpiti edition from 5–24 August.
