Feedback sought for Reserve Management Plan development
25 Aug 2025
Kāpiti Coast District Council is seeking feedback on how the community would like their parks and reserves to be used, managed, protected, and developed to help inform a draft omnibus Reserve Management Plan.
Parks, Open Space, and Environment Manager Gareth Eloff says the Government’s Reserves Act 1977 requires councils to ensure their reserves have fit-for-purpose management plans.
“Of the 130 parks and reserves Kāpiti Coast District Council manages, most have no management plan in place and many of those that do are outdated,” says Mr Eloff.
“An omnibus Reserve Management Plan will set out objectives, policies, and rules that guide decisions on the management of parks and reserves managed by Council.
“To ensure our plan reflects the community’s vision, we’re keen to get feedback on their parks, playgrounds, sports grounds, esplanades, and scenic and native reserves.
“We’d like to know what they value about their favourite spaces, what might impact their use, protection and enjoyment of these places, and what ideas they might have for their local park or reserve.
“Our team will be holding drop-ins across the district over the next few weeks and have an interactive map on Council’s website where people can share their thoughts.
“Feedback forms will also be available in Council’s service centre and libraries from 25 August until when feedback closes at 5pm on Monday 6 October.”
Mr Eloff says all feedback will be reviewed, summarised, and used to inform the draft omnibus Reserve Management Plan. The draft Plan will be ready around mid-2026 when Council will call for formal submissions.
The final Plan will guide how Council’s parks and reserves are managed. It will be continually reviewed to reflect community needs, legal requirements, and council strategies.
