Save money, connect with others and get involved in sustainability action this spring!
29 Aug 2025
Kāpiti Coast District Council and more than 20 local community groups and organisations have free and affordable events and activities that support sustainable education and practices on offer from 6 September until 30 November 2025.
Council Climate Action and Connected Communities Manager Monique Engelen says Sustainable Spring aims to promote community connection and a sense of place, offer opportunities for people to save money on household costs, and promote sustainability awareness and action.
Between September and November the calendar of free and affordable events offers a wide range of workshops and events appealing to people of all ages and backgrounds.
“This year’s programme is filled with opportunities to learn about gardening and composting, household energy saving advice, and e-bikes and cycle skills, as well as workshops for businesses, kids’ activities, clothing and household item repair, creative and DIY workshops, guest speakers, interactive documentaries, emergency preparedness, sustainable fashion, and so much more,” says Mrs Engelen.
"Sustainable Spring aligns with Council’s Climate Emergency Action Framework where we look for and take opportunities to lead, facilitate and empower community projects and initiatives that build sustainability, resilience, and green innovation.
The Sustainable Spring programme supports Council’s broader work to reduce carbon emissions and ensure the district’s communities are resilient, connected, and thriving.
“Living more sustainably doesn’t have to be a big change. The workshops on offer provide a range of ways you can reduce energy and waste, and reuse resources - often with the bonus of cost-savings for households and businesses,” says Mrs Engelen.
“By partnering with and empowering our community we can make a positive collective impact for current and future generations.”
Sustainable Spring starts on Saturday 6 September with a “Make your own cleaning products” workshop (Paraparaumu) and an open day at Miriona Community Gardens (Paekākāriki), followed by a Repair Café (Ōtaki) on Sunday 7 September. Registrations for these and other workshops are filling up fast, so people are encouraged to check out the Sustainable Spring calendar on Council’s website and start booking the ones they want to attend.
