The Kāpiti Coast is all set for summer
9 Dec 2025
With the summer holidays just around the corner, the Kāpiti Coast District Council is encouraging people to enjoy local parks and playgrounds, visit pools and libraries, experience summer events, and to stay safe as they enjoy everything Kāpiti has to offer.
Kāpiti Coast District Mayor Janet Holborow says Kāpiti is a great place year-round, but the district truly comes to life over summer.
“It’s the time when our businesses are buzzing, people are out and about enjoying the sunshine, and outdoor events add to the summer experience,” says Mayor Holborow.
“Across the district, our teams have been getting everything summer-ready behind the scenes, from caring for our tracks and trails to organising summer events at our parks and pools, we’re preparing for a special summer on the coast.”
“Our major projects take a small break over the festive season, but the crews will be back on 5 January 2026 to make the most of the settled weather.”
Council Environmental Standards Manager Richard Hopkins says while locals and visitors enjoy all the district has to offer, it’s also one of the busiest times for Council’s compliance officers.
“Our district has 40 kilometres of coastline that people make the most of during the summer season,” says Mr Hopkins.
“Year-round there are designated areas for freedom camping and boat launching and, from 1 December until 4 April 2026, there are dedicated zones for activities such as dog walking, horse riding, and fishing."
“Our Beach Bylaw prohibits vehicles, including motorbikes, on most of our beaches to help protect our special environment and to keep people safe.”
As temperatures rise and river flows drop, Mr Hopkins also encourages people to be on the lookout for toxic algae.
“Toxic algae is harmful to humans and can be fatal to dogs if ingested,” says Mr Hopkins.
"If you’re planning to swim in the district’s rivers, be on the lookout for musty-smelling brown or black mats on rocks or riverbanks, and if present, avoid these areas and keep dogs away.”
Council works in partnership with Greater Wellington to monitor water quality and toxic algae. Daily information is available on Council’s website.
People can also sign up to Council’s Antenno app to get the alerts directly to their mobile phone.
“Let’s enjoy the season together by keeping Kāpiti fun, safe, and welcoming for everyone, and don’t forget your hats and sunscreen,” says Mayor Holborow.
“Whether staying on the coast or travelling to be with family and friends, Council wishes you a safe and enjoyable summer.”
