New skatepark and playground to be built at Waikanae Park

17 Feb 2026

Work to establish a new skatepark, toilet block, and replace ageing playground equipment at Waikanae Park will get underway next month following consultation with skatepark users and playground experts to finalise designs.

Group Manager Customer and Community Brendan Owens says Waikanae Park is a key destination park for Kāpiti and we’re excited to be progressing work to deliver a new skatepark and play space.

“Our goal is to create a modern, accessible, inclusive, multi-functional, play space that meets the needs of our growing community,” Mr Owens said.

Key features of the new skatepark and playground include:

  • a new skatepark
  • a mini-basketball court
  • new play equipment
  • a new accessible toilet block
  • new safety surfaces
  • improved lighting, shade and safety features
  • pathway connecting sports areas with southern end park access.

Work to prepare the area for construction will begin next week starting with the relocation of the pump track to Waikanae North Reserve.

The upgrade will be delivered in two stages starting with the construction of the skatepark between March and June, and the new play space and toilet block between June and November.

Mr Owens said there will be a lot of activity in the park area over the next few months as Council also progresses work to close the gap in the Waikanae township to Expressway shared path.

“Keeping people safe around our worksites is our priority and areas of the park will be fenced off to enable us to get on with the job. As we won’t be removing the existing play equipment until June, tamariki can still enjoy this space until work gets underway.”
