Dune restoration
Why our dunes matter
The sand dunes on the Kāpiti Coast provide a picturesque back drop to our beaches. Our beaches provide a place to spend time in nature and for recreational activities. Looking after the biodiversity values and restoring the sand dunes enriches both our community and our taiao (natural environment).
Established native dune vegetation provides protection against erosion from the wind and the ocean and stream mouths.
It provides a natural buffer from storms and high tides, as well as an important habitat for birds, lizards, fish and invertebrates.
Coastal Restoration Trust
The Coastal Restoration Trust secured funding through the Kāpiti Coast District Council’s Climate Action Grants in 2024.
Watch an inspirational and educational dune restoration video below, which was created to highlight nature-based methods for restoring and managing beaches, estuaries, and dune systems along the Kāpiti Coast District.
It provides expert guidance for a wide range of groups working on adaptation and restoration projects within our district.
