Kāpiti Chorale presents: American Art Songs

Kāpiti Chorale returns for Session Two with a programme of American choral music, ranging from folk-inspired classics to contemporary works for choir and piano. The programme also reflects a significant milestone: 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. At the centre of the programme is Randall Thompson’s Frostiana, a much-loved setting of poems by Robert Frost that captures both the warmth and loneliness of rural American life. Around it sits a varied collection of works by composers including Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, Jennifer Higdon, and Z. Randall Stroope. The programme moves between lively and reflective, intimate and expansive. Some works draw on folk traditions and sacred texts, while others explore stillness, memory, night, light, and farewell. Audiences will hear familiar favourites such as Simple Gifts alongside atmospheric contemporary choral writing including Lux Aurumque, The Seal Lullaby, and Sure On This Shining Night.
