Aroha String Quartet
Waikanae Memorial Hall, Waikanae, Kapiti Coast
SUN 09 AUG 2:30 P.M.
Programme: Haydn: String Quartet, Opus 64, No 6 Samuel Barber: String Quartet in B minor Ross Carey: Toccatina Beethoven: String Quartet, Opus 74 "Harp" The Aroha String Quartet are popular regular visitors to Waikanae. This time they are joined by a new member, violist Eli Vincent. Australian born, he performed in Germany for some years before joining the NZSO in 2022. Outgoing violist Zhongxian Jin leaves the quartet to allow time for his teaching commitments in China. The remaining long-standing members of the quartet are Haihong Liu and Konstanze Artmann (violins) and Robert Ibell (cello). The concert opens with a delightfully lyrical quartet by Haydn, Samuel Barber's string quartet follows. Barber is well known for his famous Adagio for Strings but many are unaware that this was originally the slow movement of his only string quartet, written in 1936. Barber arranged the Adagio for string orchestra the same year and later arranged it again as his much-loved and deeply moving choral work Agnus Dei. After the interval New Zealander Ross Carey's charming Toccatina leads the way to Beethoven's popular Opus 74 quartet, known as "The Harp" because of the striking pizzicato effects in the first movement. A beautiful Adagio and lively Scherzo follow before the quartet ends with a widely varied Theme and Variations movement. Door sales will be available for the concert or tickets can be purchased from Waikanae New World and Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach. For enquiries visit www.waikanaemusic.org.nz
