Community supply

We have a number of different water schemes and treatment plants in Kāpiti, serving different communities.

Ōtaki | Hautere/Te Horo | Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati | Paekākāriki |

Ōtaki water supply

Ōtaki has three groundwater bore sources and two water treatment plant sites, which serve Ōtaki, Ōtaki Beach, and areas of the Waitohu Plateau – an estimated population of 5,883. The groundwater is chlorinated, treated with high-intensity ultraviolet (UV) light, and pH corrected, to ensure clean safe water is available in Ōtaki and the surrounding area.

We have a resource consent to take 11,233 cubic metres of water per day, across all Ōtaki water supply sources combined.

Hautere/Te Horo water supply

The Hautere/Te Horo community has a restricted water supply from two shallow bores beside the Ōtaki River. The water is chlorinated, treated with high-intensity UV, and pH corrected. The water is supplied in 'units' (approximately 1000 litres of water over a 24-hour period), originally allocated on the basis of farm area. There are 803 allocated water units.

Consumers install their own tank and pump, to provide an 'on-demand' supply. Subdivision has resulted in high demand, and the supply has become over subscribed.

We have a resource consent to take a total of 1382 cubic metres of water per day, across all Hautere/Te Horo water supply sources combined.

Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati water supply

The Waikanae Water Treatment Plant was established in 1977 to supply water to Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati, and now serves an estimated population of 38,671.

Water is sourced from the Waikanae River and, thanks to the river recharge scheme, during periods of low river flow, groundwater from the Waikanae borefield is used to recharge the river. This means we can continue to source water from the river rather than putting bore water into the supply. The groundwater bores also provide a backup source, should this ever be needed.

The water is chlorinated, treated with high-intensity UV, and pH corrected. Fluoride is also added to this water supply.

We have a resource consent to take a total of 23,000 cubic metres of water per day, across all Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati water supply sources combined. See Waikanae River flow rates at the water treatment plant on the Greater Wellington Regional Council website.

Paekākāriki water supply

A water supply has been operating at Paekakariki since 1922. The Paekākāriki Water Treatment Plant takes water from two groundwater bores near the plant, with a backup source from the Wainui Stream (Smith’s Creek), serving an estimated population served of 1,593.

The water is filtered, chlorinated and treated with high-intensity UV.
