What this page covers

This page covers animals impounded by Council Animal Management staff within the Kāpiti Coast District, including Ōtaki, Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Raumati, Paekākāriki, and surrounding rural areas.

We may seize and impound:

  • wandering stock
  • unregistered dogs
  • dogs making noise that causes distress.

What you need to do if your animal has been impounded

Contact us if:

  • you have been notified that your animal has been impounded
  • you think your animal may have been impounded
  • your animal is missing and you believe it may have been collected by Council staff.

When you contact us, provide as much information as possible about the animal, including:

  • the type of animal
  • registration details (if applicable)
  • identifying features
  • where the animal was last seen.

We make every effort to contact animal owners when an impounded animal can be identified.

If we contact you, we will arrange:

  • collection of the animal
  • payment of any outstanding fees.

Collecting an impounded animal

Impounded animals can be collected by arrangement between 7am and 7pm, seven days a week.

Before your animal can be released, you may need to:

  • confirm ownership of the animal
  • provide proof of registration where required
  • pay all outstanding impounding fees and charges.

No animal will be released until all outstanding fees have been paid.

Impounding fees apply to animals seized and held by Council.

Fees may include:

  • impounding fees
  • animal care costs
  • transportation costs
  • outstanding registration fees
  • other charges required under relevant legislation.
