Local Authority By-Elections
A Local Authority by-election must be held to fill an extra ordinary vacancy when the vacancy occurs more than 12 months out from the next full election (the second Saturday in October, once every three years).
Extra ordinary vacancies are created when:
- there has not been enough nominations for a particular area (At Large, Ward or Community Board) at the full election to fill all the positions
- when an elected member resigns more than 12 months out from the next full election
- when an elected member dies more than 12 months out from the next full election.
Should the vacancy occur closer than 12 months from the next full election a by-election is not required to fill this vacancy which may be filled by appointment or may be left vacant.
