18 Oct 2025, 10:30 AM

Kāpiti Coast District Council local body election results have been declared today, following preliminary results released after voting closed on 11 October.

Final counting of votes, including special votes, confirm Janet Holborow has been re-electedfor a second term as Mayor of the Kāpiti Coast District.

The final results confirm the Kapiti Coast Māori Ward will remain in place for the 2028 and 2031 elections.

“Thank you to the candidates who put themselves forward to represent their community,” says Kāpiti Coast District Council Chief Executive Darren Edwards.

“While we were hopeful that a record turnout of candidates would result in a record voter turnout, we are grateful to the 46.9 percent of eligible voters who participated in local democracy. This was a 1.1 percent increase of voters from 2022,” says Mr Edwards.

“Council officers are looking forward to working with our elected members over the next three years where much of the focus will be on navigating central government reforms while continuing to balance rates affordability with delivering key services for our growing district.”

Elected members officially take office tomorrow (Sunday 19 October), however they can’t act until they are officially sworn in at inaugural Council and Community Board meetings.

Notes: Council uses the STV (single-transferable vote) electoral system. The number of vacancies and votes determines the quota a candidate must reach to be elected. The formula for deciding the quota is based on the total number of valid votes, divided by the number of vacancies plus one.

The Department of Internal Affairs website includes an explanation of how candidates are elected. It can be found here https://www.stv.govt.nz/how.shtml.
